The foundation of pinstriped dominance and an inspiration to generations of Americans, Lou Gehrig (d.1941) left a legacy which time cannot diminish. The stoic first baseman is the endorser of this circa 1932 newspaper photograph. The 4-1/2 x 5-1/2” portrait was neatly culled from a publication and placed on a lined sheet of paper. Presumably taken from a period scrapbook, an additional image of Ruth and Combs is found on the reverse. The Hall of Famer penned his left shoulder with a black steel-tip fountain pen. The bold script exhibits (“8-9”) characteristics. The “Made First Homer of the Series” headline dates this keepsake to the 1932 World Series, when Gehrig abused Cubs pitching at a .529 clip. Moderate discoloration along the right edge does adversely not affect the impressive qualities of this cornerstone piece. As confirmed Gehrig signed examples are in perpetual demand, this “Iron Horse” is a solid opportunity for the baseball historian. Full photo LOA from JSA.
