Completing a league-best 81 passes in leading the freshly transplanted Washington Redskins to their first-ever title in 1937, TCU product Sammy Baugh was a prized commodity. That notion is confirmed in the offered photograph: an original news service photo depicting Baugh as he inked a lucrative contract before the 1938 season. Measuring 10x8 with a thin white border, the black-and-white photo depicts a 24-year-old Baugh with pen in hand. Flanking the quarterback are Redskins owner George Marshall and coach Ray Flaherty. The reverse is home to a vintage “International News Photos” stamping and the original typewritten caption, which is adhered on thin stock. Of interest is that the caption cites Baugh’s contract to be the largest in NFL history. The photo shows evidence of newsroom handling, with a series of creases and a grease pencil editorial notation of the reverse.
